The Suvarna Trust was registered as a public charitable trust in 1998. It is under the ownership of Udaya Chandra Suvarna, established in accordance with the will of Damodar Suvarna. The Trust is multi-faceted in nature, with the basic aim to promote social development. Besides providing education, food, and shelter to orphans and underprivileged women, the trust has been instrumental in conducting mass marriages, enhancing civil society and rural livelihood, and providing scholarship grants.
The journey of captivating the innocent smiles of the children began in 1976 when Damodar Suvarna realized that the children needed more than just a living. Coming from an economically weaker section, Suvarna’s dream was to educate the poor children, primarily his community, the Billavas. The Billavas are an ethnic group of Tulunadu, with their basic profession in toddy tapping and agriculture.
Regarded as the Messiah of the underclass, he introduced gender equality at the workplace, creches and primary classes, education for his employees’ children., and medical help to all his employees. The well-being of his staff was accorded with optimistic undertaking including pension funds, provident funds, maternity allowances, and accident compensations which were all to the fore at those times. Employing a thousand people in those times when the nation evoked “ Garibi Hatao” was a big step towards poverty alleviation. Suvarna focused on educating the needy and conducting mass marriage of the unaffordable. He empowered women by eliminating the dowry system and equipping them with enough education that included technical disciplines as well.
The self-made Damodar Suvarna was born in 1924 to a less fortunate couple, in a little village in Mangalore,Karnataka, India. It was the same year that Sree Narayana Guru, a philosopher and social reformer designed Vaikom Satyagraha, the first-ever struggle against apartheid in the world. Later in life, reforming the caste-ridden society of Dakshina Kannada was to become the core area of interest for Damodar Suvarna’s initiatives. Varija D. Suvarna was a woman force behind her husband. She toiled in the farmlands, took care of the cattle, and worked in unison with her labor force. She was a mother of eight children and had hands full to take care of her family.

Dr. Udaya Chandra Suvarna is the primary trustee who envisions a new tomorrow for the underprivileged.
Dr. Udaya Chandra Suvarna is the Chairman of the Suvarna Group of Industries from 1985 to date. He established the industry under the able guidance of his father, Sri. Damodar Suvarna. During his tenure, the company grew by leaps and bounds to become INR 200 crore company. Dr. Suvarna is also the Director of all Suvarna group of companies including Jyothi Electricals, Suvarna Transformers and Akshaya Cement Products.
He is on the advisory board of the Central Board of Workers’ Education and a member of the National Productivity Council. He was a part of the Indian delegation at the International Labour Organisations, Geneva in 2022.
Dr. Suvarna joined his father in business after completing engineering in 1980 and continued the original profession of breakwater and shore protection. Later, he expanded his business to manufacture pre-stressed concrete poles, spun pipes, and transformers. His manufacturing units are located in Bangalore, Hassan, Madikeri, Mumbai, and Goa, with an extended operation in Dubai. His stint with the hotel industry in Hassan and Bangalore further complements his entrepreneurship. He has handled strategies for the hotel industry with caution and brought about the transformation of the workers union. In memory of his father, Dr. Suvarna established Damodar Suvarna Education Trust to offer business management and hotel management courses.
Dr. Suvarna has been conferred an honorary Doctorate in Industry from Malaysia’s Open International University for Complementary Medicines in 2014.
